Does My Dog Need a Raincoat? The Honest Answer
Some dogs genuinely need one, others are fine without. Here's how to tell which side your dog is on, and what matters more than the coat itself.
Dogs that benefit most
A raincoat does real work for dogs whose bodies can't hold their own heat in cold rain:
- Small breeds — less body mass means they chill fast, especially under 10 kg.
- Seniors and puppies — temperature regulation is the first thing to go with age, and the last thing to arrive with youth.
- Short or thin coats — Greyhounds, Frenchies, Boxers. There's simply no coat to do the job.
- Dogs recovering from illness — a soaked, cold walk sets recovery back.
Dogs that skip it
Honesty time: a Husky, Golden Retriever, or any thick double-coated breed already wears a better coat than anything we sell. And in warm summer rain, a non-breathable raincoat traps heat, so for those dogs skip it and let them shake. If your dog hates clothing, forcing it turns every walk into a fight. The coat serves the dog, not the other way around.
The owner's case (it's about you too)
Even for dogs who'd survive fine without one, a raincoat cuts the after-walk cleanup in half. Dry-ish dog means no wet dog smell in the car, no soaked towel routine at the door, and fewer full baths, which is better for their coat anyway. Many dog parents start with "my dog doesn't need this" and end with "I need my dog to have this."
Getting the fit right
- Measure back length first — base of the neck to base of the tail. It's the measurement that decides the size; chest confirms it.
- Belly coverage — rain comes from below too, walking through wet grass. A good coat covers the chest and belly, not just the back.
- A leash opening on the back — so the coat works with your harness or collar, not against it.
- Reflective details — rainy days are dark days. Evening walks in rain are exactly when you want to be seen.
- A hood is optional — most dogs shake hoods off. Ears do better uncovered unless the breed tolerates it.
